Portland Open Studios Tour, Oct 14-15 & 21-22

Candlelight Glass will be participating in the Portland Open Studios tour for the first time this year.  We are Studio #32 in the tour guide. This year, you can download a free Android or Apple tour guide from the PDXOS website here: http://portlandopenstudios.com/tourguide/

You can find our studio at 2215 SW 187th. Ave., Aloha Oregon (map)

If you visit our studio (#32, Candlelight Glass) during the upcoming Portland Open Studio weekends (Oct 14-15 and 21-22, 10am to 5pm each day), we’ve got lots of new glass art for you to see and buy, plus we have a fun activity for you to enjoy. We will be offering our visitors the opportunity to create their own unique piece of glass art by sandblasting a water glass, wine glass or Pilsner Beer glass. We’ll have lots of glassware on hand and a variety of paper punches available with which you can create stickers to decorate a glass. You then use our sand blaster to make the design permanent.

We did this last year at a different open studio event and it proved to be very popular with everyone from kids to seniors. Many people used the opportunity to create Christmas gifts and some people even came back a second day with their own hand cut stencils to create some really amazing works of art. Pictured here are a couple of simple examples that were created last year. There is a minor charge to cover the cost of the materials used and we will have experts on hand to help. We hope you’ll plan a visit to our studio during the weekend tour.

Our studio will also be participating in a free raffle for a gift basket featuring items from each of the 9 artists in community 3 of the Portland Open Studios tour. You can enter at each of our studios for up to 9 chances to win.

2017 Gathering of the Guilds

It’s time once again for the Gathering of the Guilds at the Oregon Convention Center. If you appreciate locally made hand-crafted artworks, this is a show not to be missed. There are 6 guilds participating, including over 350 Northwest artists working in a variety of mediums including Glass, Ceramics, Metal, Wood, Beads & Fabric. I will be participating in the Glass Gallery section along with others from the Oregon Glass Guild. While I won’t have a booth this year, I will have one of my sand carved & gilded tables on display in the pedestal area and I will be volunteering at the show in various capacities all three days, so if you happen to see me, please say hi.

Opening night at Chessman Gallery Show

Here are some pictures from Opening night of my joint show with Ron Bunch at the Chessman Gallery in Lincoln City. I was really pleased with the way that gallery director Krista Eddy coordinated the art and glass work. Ron’s paintings and my glass complemented each other well and Krista made the most of that with her arrangement.

There was a really good turnout for the opening and people were very interested in learning about how the glass was made. I brought along my digital tablet so I was able to show them pictures of the process, including some oh-wow time-lapse videos of what happens inside the kiln during a pattern bar melt or drop ring slump. There was even a sale that happened before the official opening, but even if that’s the only sale, I consider this to have been a very positive experience. If nothing else, I got to see my name painted on the wall and in lights on the sign out front .
